A Closer Look at How Hail Forms and Its Impact on Metal Roofs

Hailstorms are a fascinating yet destructive weather phenomenon that can wreak havoc on various surfaces, including metal roofs. In this blog, we’ll delve into the science behind hailstorms, exploring the factors that contribute to their formation and understanding how hail can impact metal roofs.

The Birth of a Hailstorm:

Hailstorms usually begin in intense thunderstorms with strong upward winds called updrafts. These updrafts play a crucial role in lifting raindrops into the colder regions of the storm cloud, where temperatures are below freezing. The journey of a hailstone begins when liquid raindrops encounter supercooling – a process where they remain in liquid form despite being below the freezing point.

Multiple Updrafts and Downdrafts:

Severe thunderstorms have multiple updrafts and downdrafts, forming a repeating cycle within the cloud. As raindrops are lifted and freeze into ice, they fall back into the warmer regions, only to be lifted again. This cycle repeats, causing the hailstones to grow in size as they accumulate layers of ice.

Hailstone Growth:

The continual lifting and descending of hailstones through the updrafts and downdrafts lead to the accumulation of ice layers. The size of the hailstones depends on various factors, including the strength of the updrafts, the degree of supercooling, and the duration of their journey within the thunderstorm. Eventually, hailstones become too heavy for the updrafts to support, falling to the ground as hail.

Impact of Hail on Metal Roofs:

Metal roofs are known for their durability, however the impact of hail damage often depends on factors such as the size, speed, and density of the hailstones. Depending on these factors hail has the potential to dent and damage a metal roof, thereby compromising the structural integrity of the roof.

Protecting Your Metal Roof:

While it’s challenging to prevent hailstorms, there are proactive steps you can take to minimise potential damage to your metal roof. Engaging with a professional roof inspector post hailstorm can aid in identifying and addressing any signs of damage promptly. This not only prevents further issues but also serves to prolong the overall lifespan of your roof.
